Up Records put out its first release in 1994, making this year the 10th year we've been making records. We had some concerts, made some posters, and there's also this shirt which says UP 10 on it and depicts the "Up Robot" that appeared on an old poster design from around 1996. The design on the shirt is the very image shown here (minus the color boxes). The shirt is available in a choice of three colors, you could get a black one, or you could get a blue one, or you could get an orange one. How many robot shirts commemorating an anniversary do you have? Perhaps not enough yet!

09.08.04 - Mark Lanegan new record and Tour!
Everyone who likes great music should already know this, but Mark Lanegan has a new record out, titled Bubblegum. But don't let the title fool you, this is one of the strangest, scariest records I've ever heard in my life. It has the eeriness of Manson's (Charles, not Marilyn) songs combined with vocals that fill you with dread that Mark might know where you live, and he just might be coming to get you. For those needing a frame of reference for this, just imagine Tim Buckley's "Starsailor" being sung by Roky Erickson. And for you Up fans, there are cameo appearances by long time collaborator Mike Johnson on lead guitar for one song, and background vocals by Brett Netson among others. Brett is also on tour playing guitar for Mark, so these are shows not to be missed, and if you haven't done so already, go out and buy what is arguably one of, if not the best record to come out so far this year.

Here's the tour dates:

 07.20.04 - W. Memphis fundraiser
Hey Folks, This Friday, July 23rd at Neumo's, there is going to be a fund raiser show for the West Memphis Three. HBO made two documentaries about the three kids who were accused of killing three eight year old boys in 1994, anyone who has watched either of the documentaries "Paradise Lost," or the sequel, "Paradise Lost 2: Revelations," would come away from them with serious doubts as to the guilt of the accused. Especially when you see the crazy stepfather of one of the boys talk. The show is being put on to help raise the necessary money to do some DNA testing that could prove their innocence. Performers will be The Supersuckers, Visqueen, and Black Panties. There is also going to be an auction starting at 8:00, with items donated from the likes of Margaret Cho, Steve Earle, Halo (a great local hair salon), Bimbo's Bitchin Burrito Kitchen, EMP, Science Fiction Museum, Up Records and many more. For more information on the West Memphis Three, check out the web site, www.wm3.org

05.19.04 - The Spheres and The Films
Tomorrow night!! (Thu May 20) Brent Arnold & The Spheres will be performing at the Seattle International Film Festival (SIFF) opening gala. It'll be at the Seattle Art Museum (SAM) and tickets to this fabulous event are only $50(!) dollars. And then!! They're actually to be performing at the SAM again in June, on the 17th, I believe that's a Thursday (well, Brent says so and I'm going with it) and anyway it's part of the "Art Out Loud" series and it starts early, Brent thinks around 5:30 or 6. It's co-sponsored by KEXP.. which leads us into the fact that BA/Spheres will also be playing a live set on air for KEXP, their "Audioasis" show on Sat., June 26th sometime between 6 and 9 pm (all of these times are PST Seattle time). I know KEXP is usually available on internet radio somewhere, and they usually-if-not-always archive the in studio sets on their website somewhere at some point after they occur. So you'll probably want to check it out somehow.
 04.29.04 - Command Central
Our friend Hai Nguyen produced this life drawing of myself, "The Programmer", and our machine, the Up Records corporation monolith sprawling music takeover menace. Enjoy!

04.22.04 - Does It Have A Hemi.. Spheres?
Brent Arnold & The Spheres are playing tomorrow (Fri, 23rd) at The Hideaway in Seattle. It used to be the Sit + Spin, the address is 2219 4th Ave. 9 PM, $6, 21 and over. The Dead Science, The Papercuts, and Black Japan also play. Brent says.. "The Dead Science are amazing in case you haven't heard 'em... they just opened for Blonde Redhead (a perfect fit)... I've heard great things about the Papercuts and Black Japan... we (BA & the Spheres) have just returned from our West Coast tour with Modest Mouse and are in fine form..." So we hope you can make it.
 04.20.04 - Smells
There are a pair of Up shows at The Smell in Los Angeles over the weekend. First on Friday (Apr 23) Polar Goldie Cats play, then the next day, Sat. the 24th, Tiffany Anders is playing with Sam Jayne. You can check out the website for The Smell at www.thesmell.org.
04.16.04 - More Good News For People

04.13.04 - News: All Good, No Bad
The Seattle Times ran a review of the Modest Mouse concert at the Paramount on the 11th. Brent Arnold & The Spheres also played the show. Read the review.  03.25.04 - Two Things
Two new videos of live footage have been added to our video section today! One is Mike Johnson playing "Names" at Chop Suey last fall, and the other is Built To Spill playing "Twin Falls" and "Some" at Rockcandy in '99. It should also be noted that we've replaced our old server so all of these problems with the uprecords.com website will be over!!! Celebration should ensue.
 03.15.04 - Thanks
We've made a page here to give our thanks to all of the many people who helped us in some invaluable ways during the planning and carrying out of the week of anniversary concerts. Those that we wish to thank were not only there for us at that time, but so often provide their help and support at really any time needed, so we want to credit them for their valued support. Thanks!
The Up Records anniversary week of concerts to benefit leukemia research ended with Quasi, Duster, and Violent Green. Duster had amps as big as cars, so obviously they rocked, but Quasi were louder than them if you can believe it. You can see photos of this show here. You can also check out everything else at the main anniversary page.
 02.28.04 - UP10: Five
Night four of the Up Records anniversary week of concerts to benefit leukemia research featured Modest Mouse, as well as Caustic Resin, and Tom Romich's band, named Tommy Dirtweed. Tom Romich reunited with Caustic Resin, being a founding member of the group, and also played in his own band. You can see photos of this show here or go to the main page for the benefit and check out lots of other stuff.
 02.27.04 - UP10: Four
The Up Records anniversary week of concerts to benefit leukemia research rolled on with The Black Heart Procession, Mike Johnson & The Evildoers, Tiffany Anders, and your hostess Dina Martina! You can see photos of this show and all the others at the anniversary section, or click directly to night three right here.
 02.26.04 - UP10: Three
The Up Records anniversary benefit week of concerts continued last night, with Built To Spill, Mark Pickerel (of The Dark Fantastic), John Atkins (of 764-Hero), and spinning by DJ KO. John was joined by Joe Plummer for a song, and by Polly Johnson, as they reunited on-stage to perform the 764 song "You Were the Long Way Home". You can see photos of last night's show, and of every night as they happen, at the anniversary section. More pictures will be added as time allows, so you may want to check back every so often.
 02.25.04 - UP10: Two
The Up Records anniversary benefit week of concerts is here, kicked off last night by Built To Spill, Brent Arnold & The Spheres, Sick Bees, and Jana McCall! The show was also hostessed by Dina Martina. You can see photos of the show whether you were there for the greatness or simply wished you could have made it. Check out the new anniversary section for photos of each night, all this week, and for other news and information about our anniversary and benefits!

Last Boat

Brent Arnold is perhaps best known, at least by fans of Up Records, for the various strings and arrangements he has done for artists as varied as Modest Mouse, Jana McCall, Quasi, and Mike Johnson among others. The one 7" that we have released by Brent solo was the well recieved "Sweetness/Perversion" 45. But that is only scratching the surface of what Brent has been doing the last ten or so years. He has played in various bands ranging from a "traditional" Persian pop band recently, to the long time collaboration with jazz legend Wally Shoup since 1992 under the name Project W. In addition, he has also done work scoring films and providing music for various compilations including the Tim Buckley tribute album of a few years ago. Recently Brent has been working with the Spheres, the band that he put together for material that while holding true to his orchestral-pop-jazz roots has added vocal elements as well. Their new album, as Brent Arnold and the Spheres, is entitled Last Boat and features 9 epic tracks, produced by Phil Ek (Built to Spill) with the band. Although much of the record was recorded at Avast! as well as Robert Lang, Jack Straw, and Studio Mabuse, Brent did quite a bit of recording and overdubbing himself at Vital 5. The record also features artwork by Megan Purn and layout by Jesse LeDoux. Buy the album in record stores or right here at our store, updirect.com!
