Sam Coomes' first band was the San Francisco-based Donner Party. Formed in 1983, the band would release two albums before disbanding in '89. After moving to Portland, he formed Motorgoat along with Janet Weiss in 1990, and were later joined by Brad Pedinov. Motorgoat released two cassettes and a 7" before disbanding in '93... However, Sam and Janet continued to work together under the name Quasi. They experimented with various lineups early on, but would record as a duo, eventually settling on this format for the live performances. Together they released a cassette, and then a self released CD known as Early Recordings (this record, as well as the next were essentially recorded in basements). After this record, Janet would also start working with the legendary Sleater-Kinney, to date they have six critically acclaimed albums out. Quasi's second album "R&B Transmogrification" was released on Up Records in '97, who were fortunate enough to find out about this great band through mutual friend Kathy Molloy. "Featuring Birds" found Quasi moving towards a more "professional" sound, employing the wonderful 16 track format, while still adhering to their DIY approach to music. They toured quite extensively at this point and also served as the backing band for Elliott Smith, whom Sam was bandmates in with Heatmiser, during this period. If all this wasn't enough, Sam has also appeared on multiple Built To Spill releases. "Field Studies" would be the last Up Record Quasi would record, before moving on to Touch & Go in 2001, releasing "The Sword of God" which found them back recording in the basement, as hard as it would seem to believe due to the high quality of the recording. At this point, Sam went into the studio by himself to record the remarkable "Blues Goblins" record, which features a slew of warped and transmogrified blues covers. He also had a beautiful baby girl along with his wife Dana. Most recently, Quasi have released their second, and by all accounts best, record on Touch & Go, and have been touring as Quasi when Janet isn't already on the road with Sleater-Kinney.
