Doug Martsch is best known for the music that he has made as Built to Spill, as well as for his work with the Treepeople and the Halo Benders. With all of these bands, the focus had been to a greater or lesser extent pop oriented, and with Built to Spill in particular Doug would create a very densely crafted sound that incorporated layer upon layer of guitars to create at times a very textural sound. With his solo album, largely recorded at home, Doug went in a different direction, exploring his love for the stripped down folk blues medium. Quite a departure in deed from what he had done before, the minimal arrangements as well as instrumentation create a completely different sound as well as mood. Although this is very clearly an album by the frontman of Built to Spill, with the exception of a few songs such as "Heart (Things Never Shared)" and the guitar solo at the end of "Lift," these songs would seem for the most part out of place on a Built to Spill album in concept as well as execution. The fact that Doug plays without very many effects and finger picks on much of the album seems to have opened quite a few ears to just how talented a guitar player Doug is. The lo-fi quality of the recording also adds to the immediacy of it, as does the fact that Doug plays the majority of the music himself.
