Butterfly Train originally started out as a bass heavy hard rock outfit.
The line up for the first 7" and album consisted of Brett Nelson (Built to Spill, The Suffocation Keep) on bass and vocals, Forrest Orr on bass, and Tim Harris on drums.
The second full length release "Distorted, Retarded, Peculiar" was quite a departure from the previous releases. Along with the line up change of the rhythm section, Ambrose Richardson on bass, Eric Penney on vocals and guitar, Andy Capps (Built to Spill) on drums, and Brett Nelson adding guitar as well as piano to his repertoire, came a more 80's sound. This reflected Brett's musical direction shift, and can be heard as a fully realized vision on the self released "Suffocation Keep" cd. Anyone lucky enough to have seen the Suffocation Keep on tour with Built to Spill knows what we are speaking of - much more pop oriented than the first Butterfly Train records, while still maintaining their rock edge.
Brett continues to work with Doug in Built to Spill, and can be found on every release since "There's Nothing Wrong With Love."
